The presentation outlines the University of Oklahoma’s multi‑year effort to modernize the data integration between Banner and Canvas by transitioning from fragile, custom-built systems to the Ellucian Integration Platform (ILP). For more than two decades, OU relied on legacy integrations that increasingly failed to meet institutional needs, resulting in data inaccuracies, manual workarounds, and significant operational risk.
Prior to ILP, the Glassfish-based message broker frequently failed without warning, causing missing enrollments, delayed updates, and major disruptions during critical academic periods. Implementing ILP required extensive problem‑solving and rework, especially after nearly 800 incidents occurred during Fall 2025, when student and instructor course data reached all‑time lows in accuracy. A second‑round implementation introduced robust monitoring, clarified system ownership, and improved coordination with Ellucian and Canvas, ultimately resulting in a more resilient and scalable integration.
A key driver of the project was improving data accuracy and transforming what had been a “black box” into a measurable, observable system. The team prioritized user impact by aligning cutover with academic calendars and focusing testing on real academic scenarios, yielding an exceptionally smooth Spring 2026 semester with zero enrollment‑related incidents.
Ultimately, the success of ILP reflects strong cross-functional collaboration and demonstrates how intentional modernization reduces risk, improves reliability, and enhances the academic mission.
